What happens if you report someone on WhatsApp: what leaves your phone, and who sees it
WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages that person sent you, basic details of your last five calls with them, and their account ID. The person isn't notified, and nothing changes in your chat. A report doesn't guarantee a ban: WhatsApp decides that, and it only blocks the number for you if you choose Report and block.
WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp can't read a chat until one of the two people in it hands part of it over. A report is that hand-over. Most of what people want to know about reporting follows from this one fact: what is copied, who receives the copy, and who is never told. We read WhatsApp's help articles for Android, iPhone and the web on 15 October 2026 and set the answers out below as a ledger, in that order.
What happens if you report someone on WhatsApp?
Three things leave your phone. WhatsApp's help article on blocking and reporting says WhatsApp "receives up to five of the last messages they've sent to you". If you have called each other, it also gets basic details of the last five calls, such as who started each one and how long it lasted. The report carries the reported account's ID, when each message was sent and its type (text, image, video). On Android, WhatsApp may also learn how the first contact began.
Nothing else moves. Your other chats aren't sent, and messages you sent to them aren't part of the five. The other person isn't told, because the same article says plainly that "the user or group won't be notified". WhatsApp acknowledges the report and, in its own words, "will not contact you again".
What happens when you report someone on WhatsApp after that is WhatsApp's decision. The help article says a report "won't necessarily result in us banning the user", and that WhatsApp may ban an account it believes breaks its Terms of Service without notifying anyone. So a report is evidence. It doesn't count as a vote towards a ban.
| What you do | What WhatsApp receives | What the other side sees | Your chat afterwards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Report a contact | Up to their last 5 messages to you, last 5 calls, account ID | Nothing | Unchanged. Their messages keep arriving |
| Report and block | The same report | Nothing they are told, though some changes can be noticed | Stays in your list, and they can't reach you |
| Block only (Report box unticked) | Nothing | Nothing they are told | Stays in your list, and they can't reach you |
| Report a group | The last 5 messages in the group chat | No one in the group is told | You are removed from the group |
| Report a business | The same kind of report | Nothing | Unchanged unless you tick Block business |
Compare X, where the person you report never sees your name but a copyright notice does reach them with your details attached. That difference is laid out in what the reported account learns when you report someone on X. WhatsApp has no equivalent route that names the reporter.
What is report and block in WhatsApp?
It is two actions done in one tap: a report as described above, and a block on the number. Report and block in WhatsApp means WhatsApp gets the copy of the recent messages and the person can no longer message you, call you or see your updates. Report alone does only the first half. WhatsApp's own wording is that "reporting a user without blocking them won't stop you from receiving their messages, calls, and status updates."
The option looks different on each platform, which is why people search for "report and block whatsapp", "whatsapp report and block" and "report and block in whatsapp means" as if they were three features. They are one.
- iPhone: open the chat, tap the contact's name, scroll down and tap Report, then choose Report and block or Report.
- Android and web: the report screen has a checkbox to block the sender as well. In the other direction, the Block screen has a Report to WhatsApp box that is already ticked, so blocking someone on Android also reports them unless you untick it.
That pre-ticked box surprises people. If you only wanted the messages to stop and didn't mean to send WhatsApp five of them, untick it before you confirm.
What happens when you report and block someone on WhatsApp?
The chat stays in your list. WhatsApp doesn't delete it, and after a block you choose between Unblock and Delete Chat. In WhatsApp, report and block means the other person can't see your last seen, online status, status updates or profile photo changes from then on, and their messages and calls stop reaching you.
They aren't told. WhatsApp's help article says you'll see that you blocked them under their name, and "they won't see this". People do work it out, though. Their messages to you never show the second tick, your profile photo stops updating for them, and calls don't connect. One gap stays open: if you are both in the same group, you still see each other's messages there.
Will they know it was you, and can you find the numbers you reported?
WhatsApp tells the reported person nothing about a report: not who made it, and not that one was made. If they are banned later, the ban notice they get talks about their own activity. The reporter isn't mentioned. In a one-to-one chat, though, a ban that follows a fight can leave little doubt.
On the other question, how to find a reported number on WhatsApp: you can't, because WhatsApp doesn't document a list of reports you have made. The list that does exist is for blocks, under Settings, then Privacy, then Blocked contacts (on Android, Privacy, then Contacts, then Blocked contacts). If you used Report and block, the number is there. If you reported without blocking, keep your own note or screenshot, because the app won't keep one for you.
How to report a WhatsApp account, a group or a business account
Reporting happens inside the app. WhatsApp's help pages say that "the only way to report someone is to follow the in-app reporting process". There is no web form for reporting another user. Which menu to use depends on what you're reporting.
A person
Open the chat and tap the name at the top. On iPhone, scroll down and tap Report. On Android, open the menu, tap More, then Report. If the number isn't saved, WhatsApp shows a Report or Block prompt the first time it messages you, which is the quickest way to report a WhatsApp account you've never spoken to.
A group
Tap the group name, scroll to the bottom and choose Report group. For a WhatsApp group report, WhatsApp receives the last five messages in the group chat, and "no one in the group will know about the report". One thing the menu doesn't make obvious: reporting a group removes you from it, and only an admin can add you back. On iPhone the choices are Report and exit or Report. Android and web offer a checkbox to exit the group and delete the chat as well.
Anyone looking up how to report WhatsApp group chats that someone else added them to should know that leaving and reporting are the same action here. If you need to keep watching the group for evidence, take your screenshots first.
A business account
Open the business's profile, scroll to the bottom and tap Report business, then confirm. A Block business box sits on the same screen. For how to report a WhatsApp business account, that is the whole process, and WhatsApp publishes no separate route for it.
Most business-account reports are about impersonation: a profile using a real company's name and logo to sell or collect payments. The owner of the brand has stronger tools on other platforms than a WhatsApp report. Instagram's trademark report for a stolen brand name and X's trademark complaint against a lookalike account are worth filing too, because these setups usually run ads on both.
How to report a WhatsApp scam or a scammer
In two places: inside WhatsApp, and with the people who can follow the money. The in-app report is the only route WhatsApp accepts, and it is the same as for anyone else. WhatsApp's own scam guidance has three steps: pause and think, stop the conversation, then block and report.
Searches for how to report scam on WhatsApp, how to report WhatsApp scams or simply "report WhatsApp scam" all end at the same Report button. What changes the outcome is what you do around it. For how to report a WhatsApp scam well, take two steps before you press Report:
- Screenshot the chat, including the number, the payment request and any link. WhatsApp gets only five messages. The police and your bank need more.
- Note the number in full, with its country code. Scam numbers change often, and the code shows where the account was registered.
Then report the WhatsApp scammer in the app, and report the fraud outside it. This is how to report a WhatsApp scammer so that someone besides WhatsApp can act, and the same applies whether you call it how to report scam WhatsApp or how to report WhatsApp scammer accounts:
- UK: Report Fraud (0300 123 2040). Scotland reports through 101. The 7726 forwarding number is a scheme for SMS text messages, run by phone networks. It doesn't cover WhatsApp.
- US: the FTC's ReportFraud site.
- Everywhere: your bank, at once, if you paid anything. Banks can sometimes recall a payment made in the last few hours. After a few days they usually can't.
One scam deserves its own warning. People who ask how to fix a banned number are a favourite target, and WhatsApp's scam page says that anyone offering to unban your account for payment is "likely after your financial or personal information". The same scammers usually run on more than one app. Reporting the same scammer on Instagram covers the version that sends people to WhatsApp from Instagram ads, and clearing scam bots out of your X replies deals with the accounts that post WhatsApp numbers under popular posts.
How to report blackmail or cyberbullying on WhatsApp
For blackmail, reporting in the app comes after three other steps. WhatsApp publishes no separate page on sextortion, so the order below is ours, built from the routes that do exist:
- Don't pay and don't argue. Payment rarely ends the demands. It tells the blackmailer that you pay.
- Save the evidence with screenshots of the chat, the number and any payment details they sent. Do this before you block, because a block and a report end your contact with the account.
- Go to the police. Threats to share intimate images are a crime in most countries.
- Report and block in WhatsApp.
If the threat is to share intimate images, StopNCII.org creates a hash of the image on your own device, and participating platforms use the hash to block uploads, so the image itself is never sent anywhere. If the person in the images was under 18, WhatsApp's help pages point to NCMEC, and NCMEC's Take It Down service does the same hashing for those images. WhatsApp also asks you not to put screenshots of abuse material into the report.
Most of the people who search for how to report blackmail on WhatsApp first met the blackmailer somewhere else, usually on Instagram. The Instagram side of a blackmail report covers that account. Knowing how to report blackmailing on WhatsApp alone leaves that account active.
For cyberbullying, the tool is the same report, aimed differently. In a group, report the group if the whole group is the problem. If one member is the problem, report that member from their profile, which keeps you in the group. For how to report cyberbullying on WhatsApp involving a child, tell the school as well, because WhatsApp sees only five messages and the school can see what happens between them. When the bullying moves to posting someone's address or phone number publicly, the report for doxxing on X has a dedicated form.
How to fix a WhatsApp banned number
Use the Request review button in the app, and nothing else. WhatsApp's page on account bans gives the notice in full: "This phone number can't use WhatsApp", followed by an offer to request a review, and the line "Most reviews are completed within 24 hours." Tap Request review, add a short explanation, and wait.
If there is no button, WhatsApp's answer is blunt: it "means the ban is final and can't be appealed."
On the WhatsApp support email for a banned number: the ban page lists none. It says that contacting WhatsApp "outside the review process or through another user's account, won't expedite the review process or impact the decision." The WhatsApp contact form that does exist is for questions about the privacy policy, and it sends ban questions back to the Help Center. The one published email is for Indian users. WhatsApp's India grievance officer, grievance_officer_wa@support.whatsapp.com, is named in its monthly compliance reports, and the numbers below show how far that route goes.
WhatsApp also says that "third party services can't ban your WhatsApp account or remove your account ban". That holds for every service, including ours. We don't sell unbans, and what a ban service can and can't lawfully do explains why no honest one does. Telegram works differently: there, a lockout is often a timed limit that expires on its own, and how long Telegram's attempt limits last covers those messages.
How many WhatsApp reports end in a ban? India's monthly figures
WhatsApp publishes a user-safety report every month under India's IT Rules. It is the only regular count of WhatsApp bans and complaints we know of. The edition dated 1 October 2026 covers August 2026.
- Accounts banned in August 2026: 6,202,400 accounts with +91 numbers.
- Banned before any user report: 1,690,800, or 27%. WhatsApp says the total includes action taken on negative feedback from the Report feature.
- Grievances received: 27,085, of which 15,106 were ban appeals. Accounts actioned on those appeals: 129, about one in 117.
- Safety grievances: 125, none actioned. WhatsApp says these are answered by directing people to in-app reporting.
Two things follow. First, most bans don't depend on any single person reporting, since millions of accounts a month are removed on signals WhatsApp collects itself and on reports in bulk. Second, appeals by email rarely work. Fewer than 1% of ban appeals sent to the grievance channel in August led to action, which matches WhatsApp's line that the in-app review is the route that counts.
The same person is on Instagram or X: which report fits each?
A WhatsApp report covers one number. Scammers, blackmailers and impersonators usually run accounts on other platforms too, and each platform takes its own report. These are the guides we point people to.
On Instagram, start with the options Instagram gives for reporting a person.
On X, the steps for reporting a single tweet handle one post, and reporting a whole X account from its profile handles the account behind it. Content copied from you calls for a DMCA takedown notice to X, a separate legal route with its own form. If you need to know which of those reports actually lead to a suspension, read which rule breaks get an X account suspended.
FAQ
Does WhatsApp tell someone you reported them?
No. WhatsApp's help article says the reported user or group won't be notified. The person isn't told who reported them or that a report was made. If WhatsApp later bans the account, the ban notice they see doesn't name anyone.
How many reports does it take to ban a WhatsApp account?
WhatsApp publishes no number. Its help article says a report won't necessarily lead to a ban. Bans follow a review against the Terms of Service, and in India in August 2026, 27% of banned accounts were removed before any user report.
Does reporting someone on WhatsApp delete the chat?
No. Reporting a contact leaves the chat as it was, and Report and block keeps it in your list too. You can delete it yourself afterwards. Reporting a group is different: you are removed from the group, and Android and web offer to delete the chat at the same time.
Can I report a WhatsApp number I've never chatted with?
Only if it has messaged you. WhatsApp's reports work from a chat, because the report sends messages from that chat. When an unknown number messages you, WhatsApp shows a Report or Block prompt. There is no web form for reporting a number.
Can I undo a report on WhatsApp?
No. Once sent, the report and its five messages are with WhatsApp and the app has no withdraw option. You can undo the block part of Report and block from Blocked contacts, and that doesn't affect the report.
What happens when you block someone on WhatsApp without reporting?
They can't message or call you or see your last seen, online status, status updates and profile photo changes, and WhatsApp gets nothing. On Android, untick the Report to WhatsApp box on the block screen, because it is ticked by default.
Is there a WhatsApp support email for a banned number?
Not on WhatsApp's ban page. It sends people to the Request review button in the app and says that contacting WhatsApp outside that process won't speed up the review. Indian users have a published grievance officer address, but fewer than 1% of ban appeals sent there in August 2026 led to action.
Can a WhatsApp group admin see who reported the group?
No. WhatsApp says no one in the group will know about the report. Members may notice that you left, because reporting a group removes you from it.
