How can I report a fake Facebook account? Start with who it is pretending to be

To report a fake Facebook account, open the profile, click Options below the cover photo, choose Report profile and follow the prompts. Pick the impersonation reason if it copies you, someone you know or a public figure, and the fake account reason if it copies nobody. No Facebook account? Use Meta's impostor contact form.

Facebook treats two different problems under one Report button. An impostor copies a real person: your name and photos, your friend's, or a celebrity's. A fake account copies nobody; it is a made-up person, a spam profile, or a personal profile run for a shop or a pet. The reason you choose sends the report to a different rule, so the useful first question isn't "how do I report a fake profile on Facebook", it's "who is this account pretending to be?"

How to report a fake account on Facebook: who is it copying?

Answer that and the rest follows. Meta's help page Report a Facebook profile or Page pretending to be you or someone else covers profiles and Pages that pretend to be "you, someone you know or a public figure (e.g. celebrity, politician)". Everything outside that list is a fake account report. A brand is a third case: a Page copying a company can be reported in the app, but the owner gets more from Meta's intellectual property forms.

How can I report a fake Facebook account from the app or a computer?

The steps are the same for both reasons; only the choice in the middle differs. They are also the whole answer to how do I report a fake Facebook account on a phone, a tablet or a computer. Meta's instructions, read on 17 October 2026:

  1. Open the profile. If you can't find it, search the name or ask a friend to send you the link. The facebook.com address matters, because names aren't unique.
  2. Click Options below the cover photo. In the phone app, which is where most people work out how to report fake account on FB, look for the three dots on the profile.
  3. Choose Report profile. For a Page, choose Report Page from the same menu.
  4. Follow the prompts. Pick the impersonation reason or the fake account reason using the table above.

Meta's general profile article adds a note people miss: "Depending on your feedback, you may then be able to submit a report to Meta. For some types of content, we don't ask you to submit a report, but we use your feedback to help our systems learn." If the last screen doesn't offer a Submit button, you've given feedback, not a report, and you won't get a case in your Support Inbox. Go back and pick a more specific reason. Impostor profiles can also be reported from Messenger, by opening the chat with them and tapping their name.

How do I report someone impersonating me on Facebook?

Report the profile and say it is pretending to be you. That is how to report an impersonator on Facebook when the copy is of you. That's the route Meta's impersonation page gives, and it works whether the copy uses your name, your photos or both. Before you report, save what proves it's a copy: screenshots of the fake profile with its link visible, your real profile, and any messages the impostor sent to your friends.

Then tell your friends, from your real account, that the copy isn't you, and ask them not to accept requests from it. Friends who received messages can report the profile too, with the "someone I know" option. The person being copied is the strongest reporter, though, because Meta can check you against the account you're reporting.

Impostors who copy you on Instagram or X need separate reports. Instagram's form for someone impersonating you uses Meta's shared review, and X's impersonation report and who may file it works differently, with its own identity check.

How to report Facebook impersonation if you have no account

Use Meta's Report an Impostor Account contact form. The help page links it for anyone who doesn't have a Facebook account "or lost access to your account". When we opened it on 17 October 2026, the form asked one question, "Which of the following best describes your situation?", and offered one answer: "Someone created an account pretending to be me or a friend". Have the impostor's profile link ready before you start.

The form is for impersonation only. A fake account that copies nobody can't be reported without an account, so ask a friend who has one. The same applies if the impostor blocked you: blocked users can't open the profile, so a friend has to report it, or you use the form.

Reporting fake accounts on Facebook that copy nobody

Pick the fake account reason. Meta's fake accounts enforcement report describes two kinds it removes: accounts "created with malicious intent to violate our policies", and personal profiles "created to represent a business, organization or non-human entity, such as a pet". The second kind surprises people. A cat with its own personal profile breaks the rule just as a spam bot does, though Meta says it prioritises accounts "that seek to cause harm".

Most fake accounts never reach a user report. Meta says its systems block "millions of attempts to create fake accounts every day", and those blocks aren't counted in its figures. For the first half of 2026 it estimated that "less than 5%" of daily active people across its apps were violating accounts. So a fake profile that is still up has slipped past automated checks, and your report is often the first human signal on it. Report each profile separately. Short searches like "how to report fake fb account" or "fb fake account report" lead to the same menu, because Facebook has no separate form for fakes.

How to report a Facebook page for impersonation

Open the Page, click Options below its cover photo, choose Report Page and pick the impersonation reason. Check the Page transparency section first. It shows when the Page was created, any past names and the countries its managers are in. A "fan" Page created last week that renamed itself to match a real brand is easy for a reviewer to judge, so mention those facts in any notes.

A Page that copies a company's name or logo is closer to a trademark problem than impersonation, and only the owner can file that. On Instagram the same idea applies to reporting an Instagram page that copies a brand or person. Fake Pages that run ads are worth one extra report each, on the ad itself.

What happens after you report an impersonation account on Facebook?

Meta reviews the account against its rules and posts the result in your Support Inbox, if you submitted a report rather than feedback. The account holder isn't told who reported it. If Meta says the account doesn't go against its standards, you can ask for another review from the same inbox.

Public numbers won't tell you much about how often this works. We searched the EU's DSA Transparency Database on 17 October 2026 for Facebook decisions from 1 to 16 October. Facebook filed 11,695,944 of them, and none carried the database's "impersonation or account hijacking" keyword. The keyword works: other platforms tagged 3,710 decisions with it in the same period. Meta simply doesn't use it, so impersonation removals are hidden inside its broader categories.

Facebook impersonation numbers: 0 of 11,695,944 EU decisions tagged impersonation; fake accounts under 5%

If the impostor used your identity to defraud people and you need to know who ran it, a report won't give you that. Meta's help page on requesting impostor account data says to "contact a lawyer or your local law enforcement agency" first; Meta then deals with them, not with you.

When the fake account is on Instagram, X or Telegram too

Impostors rarely stay on one app. On Instagram, start with the Instagram reason picker for reporting someone, and if the copy is threatening to post private photos, use the Instagram blackmail and sextortion route instead.

On X, report the account with X's whole-account report and the posts with a single-tweet report for each fake post. What X tells you after a report explains the notices, and the violations that end in an X suspension sets out what gets an impostor removed. If the fake copies your photos or videos, a DMCA notice to X for your copied photos can be faster, and removing fake follower bots on X helps if the copies start following you.

On Telegram, a copied name often comes with a look-alike username. If the impostor holds a handle close to yours, how Telegram usernames are bought on Fragment explains whether you can get one back. And if someone sent you login codes "by mistake" and you now see Telegram's "limit exceeded" message, an impostor may be trying to take over your account, so stop and secure it first.

FAQ

Will the person know I reported their fake Facebook account?

No. Facebook doesn't tell the account holder who reported them. They may notice that the profile was removed or restricted, but your name isn't attached to the report.

What's the difference between a fake account and impersonation on Facebook?

An impersonation account copies a real person, such as you, a friend or a public figure. A fake account copies nobody: an invented person, a spam profile, or a personal profile run for a business or a pet. Each is a separate reason in the report menu.

Can I report a fake Facebook profile without logging in?

Only for impersonation. Meta's Report an Impostor Account form is open to people without an account or who lost access to theirs. A fake account that copies nobody has to be reported from inside Facebook, so ask a friend if you have no account.

Why did Facebook say the impostor doesn't go against its standards?

Often because the report went under the wrong reason or was sent as feedback only. Ask for another review from your Support Inbox, and if the account copies you, report it again with the pretending to be someone reason and proof of who you are.

How long does Facebook take to remove an impersonation account?

Meta publishes no fixed time. Most of its decisions are automated, but a review that has to check your identity can take longer. Check your Support Inbox for the result.

Should I ask friends to report the fake Facebook account too?

Only friends who were contacted by it or can confirm it isn't you. Meta's position is that report volume doesn't decide removals, so a single report with the profile link and proof beats a pile of copies.

How to report fake profiles on Facebook that keep coming back?

Report each new copy as it appears, and mention in the report that it replaces one already removed. Meta's Account Integrity rules let it disable accounts owned by someone whose earlier account was disabled, so repeat copies of the same person are easier to act on.

Can Facebook tell me who created the account impersonating me?

Not through a report. Meta says to contact a lawyer or local law enforcement first; account data is only released to them through Meta's legal process.
