Is Telegram a scam, or just an app that scammers like to use?
No. Is Telegram a scam? The app itself is a real messenger with over a billion monthly users, published source code and official builds in the main app stores. What gets people hurt is the strangers on it: fake support agents, crypto 'mentors' and job recruiters who message first and ask for money, codes or a deposit.
People type this question after a bad week. A "recruiter" paid them $12 for liking hotel listings, then wanted $300 to unlock the next level. Or a "support agent" asked for the five-digit login code. The app was never the problem in those stories. The person on the other end was.
Is Telegram legit or scam? Two questions in one
Split it in two and both halves get easy answers. First: is Telegram messenger a scam as a product? No. It has run since 2013, its client apps are open source, and Pavel Durov put monthly users at "significantly over 1 billion" in a post on 19 March 2025. It isn't a scam site that takes a sign-up fee: the app is free, and the paid Premium tier is sold inside the official app.
Second: is Telegram used for scams? Yes, a lot. The same features that make it handy for news channels and communities also make it cheap for fraud. So "Telegram legit or scam" has a split verdict. The software is legit. Any stranger who writes to you first deserves the suspicion you'd give an unknown caller.
Is the Telegram app a scam, or a fake copy of it?
The real one isn't. A copy can be. Before you ask whether Telegram is a scamming app, check that what's on your phone is Telegram at all. In September 2023 Kaspersky found trojanized "faster" Telegram mods on Google Play that quietly copied chats and contacts to an outside server; The Record's write-up of the removed apps covers what they took. Google pulled them after the report.
A Telegram scam app usually gives itself away in one of three ways:
- Where it came from. The official builds are listed on telegram.org/apps. An APK from a channel post or a "Telegram Pro" site is not one of them.
- What it promises. Unlimited downloads, hidden read receipts or "VIP" speed are pitches for mods, not features of the real client.
- What it asks. A web page that looks like Telegram Web and wants your phone number and code is a phishing page. The real web client lives on web.telegram.org.
So is Telegram a scam app? The official one isn't. A lookalike can be, and that is why the store and the address bar matter more than the logo.
Why is Telegram used for scams so often?
Because it is cheap reach with little friction. Five design choices add up:
- Public usernames and global search. Anyone can find a channel, and in many groups anyone can message you without having your number.
- Huge channels. One account can broadcast to an unlimited audience, which suits fake "signal" groups and giveaways.
- Bots and payments. A bot can run a whole fake shop or "investment dashboard" inside the chat.
- Built-in crypto. Wallet links make it quick to send coins that can't be pulled back.
- Private chats stay private. Telegram's FAQ says private groups and chats "are private amongst their participants" and that it does "not process any requests related to them" (in its copyright answer). Public channels, bots and groups are what moderators act on.
That answers why Telegram is full of scams in some corners, and why it is known for scams more than apps that tie every account to a contact list. It doesn't mean Telegram is for scams. Can Telegram be used for scamming? It can, the same as any messenger, but here it costs scammers less effort than on most apps.
How do people get scammed on Telegram? Six openings
Almost every case we see starts with one of these first messages. The table shows what the scammer says, the tell, and where it ends:
| Opening | What they say first | The tell | Where it ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task or job offer | "Earn $200 a day rating products" | Small payouts, then a "top-up" to unlock tasks | Deposits that never come back |
| Crypto mentor or signal group | "Our members made 40% this week" | A private platform only they link to | A withdrawal "tax" or a frozen balance |
| Fake support or admin | "Your account will be deleted, verify now" | Asks for the login code or 2FA password | Account takeover |
| Impersonated contact | "New number, can you lend me some money?" | Same photo, a new username, urgency | A transfer to a stranger |
| Marketplace or username deal | "Pay first, I'll send it after" | Refuses the official escrow or market | Paid for nothing |
| Recovery or "hacker" service | "We can get your money back" | Fee up front, guaranteed result | A second loss |
The first row is the one the FTC warned about on 14 August 2025. Its task-scam alert describes an unexpected message on "WhatsApp, Telegram, text, or social media", early payouts of "usually $5 to $20" to build trust, and then a demand for your own money. Its rule is short: never pay to get paid. That is how Telegram is used for scams in practice. Nobody breaks the app. They talk you into acting.
The username row is common because handles trade for real money. The real marketplace is Fragment; how the Telegram username market prices handles shows the honest route, and the checks before you buy a Telegram username covers the escrow step a fake seller will try to skip.
Does Telegram have a lot of scams? What the numbers show
Telegram publishes one live figure, and nobody publishes a scam-only count. On 21 October 2026 we opened Telegram's moderation page and the counter read 28,234,966 groups and channels blocked in 2026. We had logged 27,126,529 on 6 October, so about 74,000 were blocked a day in between. That counter covers every rule, from illegal goods to spam, not scams alone.
The losses are easier to count than the scams. The FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Report logged 181,565 complaints involving cryptocurrency, with more than $11 billion lost, out of nearly $21 billion in total. Crypto investment fraud alone was $7.2 billion. The report doesn't rank apps, so it can't say Telegram is full of scams. It does show the payment route most Telegram scams end with.
So does Telegram have scams? It has plenty, and the honest reply to "are there Telegram scams on other apps too" is also yes: how Facebook handles scam reports and the Instagram scammer report flow show the same patterns elsewhere.
The SCAM and FAKE labels and what they miss
Telegram can stamp an account, bot or channel with a red SCAM or FAKE label. In Telegram's own API notes, FAKE means it "was reported by many users as a fake or scam", and SCAM means "probably a scam". Seeing one settles it. Not seeing one proves nothing. Most scam accounts are new, short-lived and never reported enough to be labelled.
Telegram also says on its verification page that it "doesn't verify user accounts at the moment". A blue check on a person's private chat isn't a real thing, and a name like "Telegram Support" in a DM is just a name anyone can type. Real service messages come from the official Telegram account in your chat list, and nobody honest asks you to send back the code it delivers.
When a scam channel is finally restricted, visitors see a notice instead of posts. what "This channel can't be displayed" means explains who sets that message and why.
How to not get scammed on Telegram
Can someone scam you on Telegram if you follow these? It gets much harder:
- Under Settings › Privacy and Security, set Phone Number to "Nobody" and Groups & Channels to "My Contacts".
- Turn on Two-Step Verification, so a stolen code alone doesn't open your account.
- Never share a login code, never send a screenshot of it, and never type it into a website.
- Treat every unexpected DM about money, jobs or crypto as a scam until proven otherwise.
- Check a "friend" on a second channel, such as a phone call, before sending anything.
- Never pay a fee to withdraw money, unlock tasks or "recover" funds.
- Buy usernames, gifts or Stars only through Telegram's own markets.
- Report and block, then leave the chat. Arguing hands them more time.
Can I get scammed on Telegram anyway? You can, mostly when someone rushes you, because nearly every script above uses a clock: a deadline, an expiring bonus, a locked account. Slowing down costs nothing and breaks most of them.
Telegram is also where report-bot sellers advertise, and many of those are scams in their own right. Read the truth about X mass report bots sold on Telegram and what the Instagram report-bot scripts on GitHub really do before paying for one.
Telegram scams on Reddit: how to use those threads
Telegram scams Reddit threads are useful for one thing: matching a script. Paste the opening line or the scammer's @username into Reddit search, and you'll often find someone who got the same message. We tried to pull a month of r/Scams titles mentioning Telegram for this page, but the archive API timed out twice, so we're not quoting counts from it.
Two cautions. Commenters offering to "recover" your money are almost always the sixth row of the table. And a thread is not a report: the account keeps running until Telegram gets one.
Already sent money or a code? Do this first
Speed matters more than a perfect report:
- Code shared: open Settings › Devices, end every session you don't recognise, then set or change your Two-Step password.
- Money sent: call your bank or card issuer today. Crypto rarely comes back, but record the wallet address and transaction ID.
- Report it in Telegram: open the profile, tap Report, and pick the closest reason. Our guide on where to report a Telegram scammer lists each route, including @notoscam for impersonators.
- File with the authorities: IC3 in the US, Report Fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. How to file a Telegram fraud report covers what to attach.
Paid a "report bot" to get even? How Telegram report-bot scams work explains why that money is gone too.
When the same scammer moves to another app
Scam crews rarely stay on one network. They run ads on YouTube, warm people up on Facebook or Instagram, then move them to Telegram. Report each piece where it lives.
Facebook: a fake profile wearing someone's face goes through the fake Facebook account report. A bait post can be flagged with Facebook's report option for a single post, and reporting a person on Facebook covers the profile itself. If they lifted your photos, a Facebook copyright claim is often faster. For a whole account, see what it takes to get a Facebook account taken down. Worried they'll know it was you? whether Facebook reports stay anonymous answers that, and the Instagram answer is in whether an Instagram user learns who reported them.
YouTube: "join our Telegram" investment ads go through the YouTube ad report, and a channel built on fake giveaways through reporting a whole YouTube channel. If the scammer turns to threats, YouTube's harassment rules and a YouTube privacy complaint are the routes, and blocking someone on YouTube stops the comments.
TikTok, Snapchat and WhatsApp: a promo clip can go through TikTok's video report, the account through reporting someone on TikTok. On Snapchat, the in-chat report on Snapchat handles a message and the Snapchat account report the profile. WhatsApp task scams follow the same script as Telegram ones: reporting a WhatsApp number shows the steps, and what WhatsApp does after a report sets expectations.
FAQ
Is Telegram a scam or a real company?
A real company. Telegram has run since 2013, publishes the source code of its apps and reports over a billion monthly users. Scams happen on it, but the app itself doesn't charge you or take your money.
Can you get scammed on Telegram app without sending money?
Yes. If you share your login code, a scammer can take over the account and use it to scam your contacts. Turn on Two-Step Verification and never pass the code on.
Can you be scammed on Telegram just by opening a message?
Opening a text message in the official app isn't the risk. Tapping a link, installing a file someone sends, or typing your code into a site they suggest is where the harm starts.
Do people get scammed on Telegram by people they know?
Often by someone pretending to be a person they know. Scammers copy a friend's name and photo, open a new account and ask for an urgent loan. Check by phone before sending anything.
Does Telegram refund money lost to scammers?
No. Telegram doesn't hold your payments, so it can't reverse them. Your bank or card issuer is the only party that might, which is why you should call them first.
Will Telegram tell the scammer that I reported them?
Telegram doesn't publish a notice that names the reporter. A report sends the chat to its moderators, and you can block the account at the same time.
Is Telegram known for scams more than WhatsApp?
It has a louder reputation because public channels and open groups let strangers reach you without your number. WhatsApp task scams follow the same script, so the habit that protects you is the same on both.
Is a Telegram channel with many subscribers safe?
Not by itself. Subscriber counts can be bought, and scam channels often copy a real brand's name. Check the exact username against the brand's own website.
