Telegram scams to watch out for, and the message where each one shows its hand

Telegram scams are cons run through Telegram chats, groups, channels and bots. They differ in the opening line, but each one reaches a turn where it asks for one of four things: your login code, a deposit, a wallet signature, or a fee to release money you were promised. Refuse that request and the scam stops working.

Most lists of Telegram scams sort them by theme: crypto, jobs, romance. That helps you name a scam after it has happened. It is less useful in the moment, because a romance chat can end in a crypto deposit and a job offer can end in a stolen account. So we sorted ten scams by the message where the scammer finally asks for something. On 21 October 2026 Telegram's moderation page counted 28,235,069 groups and channels blocked so far in 2026. Many scams still get through, which is why the turn matters more than the label.

When we lined up the FTC's task-scam spotlight, the FBI's 2025 crime report and a week of r/Scams threads on 21 October, we expected a long list of tricks. We saw four requests instead. Scams on Telegram, whether people call them Telegram app scams or Telegram messenger scams, all end at one of them.

How do Telegram scams work?

Telegram scams work in three stages. First comes the contact: a wrong-number text, an invite to a group, a "support" account, a dating match that moves you to Telegram. Then comes trust, built over days with small talk, screenshots of profits or a tiny payout you really receive. Last comes the turn, the single request the whole script exists for. The app helps the scammer in a few specific ways. Anyone can set a display name, so "Telegram Support" or a famous name costs nothing. Channels can hide who runs them. Bots can take payments and hand out fake balances around the clock.

This is also why scams using Telegram rarely start on Telegram. The FTC's task-scam data spotlight describes job offers that begin as a text or WhatsApp message and then move to an encrypted app. Scamming on Telegram is usually the second act.

What are the most common Telegram scams, and what does each one ask for?

These are the common Telegram scams we see named again and again in police warnings and victim threads, sorted by the turn:

ScamHow it opensThe turn: what it asks for
Code scam"I sent you a code by mistake, can you forward it?"Your login code, then your account
Phishing bot or link"Verify your account" or "claim your Premium gift"Your phone number and code on a fake page
Task or job scam"Earn $300 a day liking videos"A deposit to "unlock" bigger tasks
Investment groupA mentor posting daily winsA deposit on a trading site they pick
Crypto pump club"Next coin drops at 8pm, VIP only"A VIP fee, then buying their coin
Airdrop or giveaway"Free tokens, connect your wallet"A wallet signature that drains it
Wrong number"Hi, is this Anna?"Weeks later, an investment tip
Romance or datingA match who moves you to TelegramMoney for an emergency or a ticket
Sugar momma"I'll pay you a weekly allowance"A "registration" or "verification" fee first
Celebrity or founderA channel using a famous nameCrypto sent to "double" it

Read the right-hand column only. Every row ends with you sending something. A genuine employer, partner or giveaway does not need your code, your seed phrase or a fee before paying out.

Telegram scams sorted by the four asks: login code, deposit, wallet signature, release fee

Telegram code scam and phishing: the account is the prize

The Telegram code scam takes your account, not your money. Someone, often a hacked friend, says a code reached you by mistake and asks you to pass it on. That code is a login code for your own number. Once they have it, and your two-step password if you never set one, they sign in, end your other sessions and message your contacts with the same trick. Codes arrive in the chat from the official account marked Telegram with a blue tick. Nobody legitimate ever needs you to forward one.

Telegram phishing scams do the same with a page or bot that looks official: "your account will be deleted", "claim free Premium". If you typed a code into one, act within minutes. The steps to take back a hijacked Telegram login start with Settings, Devices. If the login was lost completely, getting back into a Telegram account you can't open covers number and email routes.

Telegram job scams and the task scam

Telegram job scams promise easy pay for small tasks: rating hotels, liking videos, "optimising" app listings. The first few tasks really pay a few dollars into a dashboard you can see. Then a "combination task" pushes the balance negative, and you must deposit crypto to clear it before you can withdraw. Each deposit unlocks a bigger one. The FTC counted about 5,000 task-scam reports in 2023 and about 20,000 in the first half of 2024 alone, with job-scam losses above $220 million in those six months.

Look up any Telegram job scam Reddit thread on r/Scams and you'll read the same arc: a recruiter, a mentor in a group chat, a "team leader" who cheers every deposit. The tell is simple. Real jobs pay you. They never ask you to pay in to get paid.

Crypto scams on Telegram: investment groups, pump clubs and airdrops

Telegram crypto scams are the costliest group. The FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Report release puts total reported losses near $21 billion, with investment fraud making up nearly half of all scam losses. Telegram investment scams usually run a group full of fake members cheering a mentor. They send you to a trading site that shows rising profits and then charges "tax" before any withdrawal.

A crypto pump club Telegram scam is cruder. The admins buy a tiny coin early, sell VIP access to the "signal", and dump their coins on the members who buy at the announced minute. The Telegram airdrop scam goes straight for the wallet: a link to "claim" free tokens asks you to connect and sign. That signature can give the site permission to move everything. In crypto telegram scams the turn is often a signature, not a payment, so it doesn't feel like sending money.

Telegram romance scams, dating scams and the wrong number opener

Telegram dating scams usually begin on a dating app. The match suggests moving to Telegram "because it's private", which also takes you away from the app's scam filters. Telegram romance scams then follow one of two endings: an emergency that needs money, or an investment the partner is "already winning at". The second is the slower, larger version, sometimes called pig butchering.

The Telegram wrong number scam is the cold-start version. "Hi, is this Anna? Sorry, wrong person" turns into a friendly chat, then a photo of a nice lunch, then talk of a crypto platform weeks later. If a stranger's wrong number becomes a friendship and then a trading tip, you have just watched the script run start to finish. Telegram sugar momma scams skip the slow part: the "allowance" is real only after you pay a fee to "verify" or "activate" it.

Telegram celebrity scams and fake support accounts

Telegram celebrity scams use a famous name, a copied photo and a channel with a few thousand bought subscribers. The offer is nearly always a crypto giveaway: send some, get double back. Fake support accounts work the same way with Telegram's own name, offering to "unfreeze" or "verify" you. Telegram marks some of these with a red Scam or Fake label once enough users report them, but a fresh copy can appear the next day.

If the account copies you, not a celebrity, the route is an impersonation report. If your own account got frozen after a scammer reported you first, what a frozen Telegram account needs to come back covers the appeal. A full ban needs the appeal steps for a banned Telegram number.

What changed in 2026: gift bots, mini apps and recovery agents

The latest Telegram scams are older scripts with new props. Three changes stand out this year. Fake "gift" and Premium bots copy Telegram's own gift feature, so the offer looks native. Task scams now arrive as polished mini apps inside Telegram, with balances that update live. And recovery scams follow every big loss: an "agent" in your comments promises to get your crypto back for an upfront fee. That last one is worth a separate warning. Real help never asks you to pay before anything is returned, and no one can reverse a crypto transfer by hacking.

If you want honest help with an account rather than money, compare offers against what a genuine Telegram recovery specialist can and can't do. Our full Telegram account recovery guide lists the free official routes first.

After a scam on Telegram: five steps, in this order

  1. Stop paying. Any new "fee", "tax" or "unlock" is part of the scam.
  2. Save evidence before blocking: the @username, the t.me link, screenshots with dates, wallet addresses and transaction IDs.
  3. Secure the account. Set a two-step password and end unknown sessions.
  4. Report it inside Telegram and to the police or national fraud office where you live.
  5. Call your bank or exchange the same day if card or bank money moved.

The detailed Telegram reporting routes, for a scammer, a scam bot or a fake account, are on our Telegram fraud report page. If you'd rather leave Telegram altogether once it's sorted, deleting a Telegram account for good explains the self-destruct timer.

The same scam scripts on Facebook and WhatsApp

Most Telegram scams start somewhere else, so the report often belongs there too. On Meta's apps, the Facebook scam report options fit fake sellers and investment posts. For a fake profile using a real person's photos, use the impostor report for a fake Facebook profile. A single bait post goes through reporting one Facebook post, and a person goes through reporting someone on Facebook by reason. Worried the scammer will see your name? Read whether a Facebook report stays anonymous. When a whole scam profile should go, see what it takes to take down a Facebook account. If a scammer copied your photos or video, filing a Facebook copyright claim is the stronger route.

Wrong-number openers often come by WhatsApp first. Reporting a WhatsApp number takes seconds, and what WhatsApp does after a report explains the last five messages it receives.

Where the bait runs on YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat

Fake celebrity giveaways run as video ads too: use the YouTube ad report for an ad and the YouTube channel report for a channel posing as a star. If a scammer harasses you in comments after you call them out, check where YouTube's harassment rules draw the line, file a YouTube privacy complaint if they post your details, and block them on YouTube so they can't comment again.

Task scams recruit on TikTok as well: reporting a TikTok video handles the clip and reporting a TikTok account handles the recruiter. Dating-scam profiles show up on Snapchat; how to report someone on Snapchat covers a chat, and reporting a whole Snapchat account covers the profile. On every app the habit is the same: save the evidence, report through the official channel, and never pay to get paid.

FAQ

Is Telegram itself a scam?

No. Telegram is a real messaging app. The scams run on it because anyone can open a channel, use any display name and run a bot. The app is a tool; the person asking for your code or a deposit is the scam.

What is the Telegram code scam?

Someone asks you to forward a code you just received. It is your own login code, and sending it lets them sign into your account. Telegram's codes arrive from the official account with a blue tick, and you should never share them.

Can a Telegram job really pay you to like videos?

Not at the rates these offers quote. Task scams pay small amounts at first, then require deposits to unlock withdrawals. If a job asks you to send money or crypto to get paid, it is a task scam.

How can I tell a fake Telegram crypto group?

Watch for a mentor who posts only wins, members who praise every trade, pressure to use one specific trading site, and fees or tax before any withdrawal. A red Scam or Fake label on the channel confirms other users reported it.

Can I get money back after scams on Telegram?

Sometimes, if you act fast. Call your bank or card issuer the same day and report to the police. Crypto transfers are much harder to reverse. Ignore anyone who offers to recover crypto for an upfront fee: that is a second scam.

What are Telegram sugar momma scams?

An account offers you a regular allowance or gifts, then asks for a small registration, verification or transfer fee first. The allowance never arrives. Any offer of free money that costs you money is a scam.

Does Telegram warn you about scam accounts?

Partly. Channels, groups and bots that many users report can get a red Scam or Fake label next to the name, and new chats from strangers show a report and block bar. A missing label doesn't mean an account is safe.

Should I block a scammer on Telegram?

Yes, after you save the evidence. Screenshot the chat, note the @username and t.me link, report the account, then block it. Blocking first can make the evidence harder to collect.
